Gallery: Launceston and Northeast

The Launceston and Northeast region encompasses a remarkable diversity of landscapes, from the historic Low Head Lighthouse and Port Sorell to the Bay of Fires. At its heart, Launceston features the dramatic Cataract Gorge where the South Esk River has carved through ancient rock, while the Tamar Valley stretches north between rolling hills of vineyards and lavender fields.

The region rises dramatically from sea level to Ben Lomond's dolerite columns at 1,572 metres, forming Tasmania's second-highest peak. The Northeast Highlands include Mount Barrow and Mount Victoria, their slopes cloaked in pristine rainforest, while the mountain bike trails of Blue Tier and Derby wind through ancient myrtles and giant ferns.

The coastline transforms from the sheltered waters of the Tamar Estuary to the pristine white beaches of the Bay of Fires, where orange lichen-covered granite boulders create one of Tasmania's most photographed landscapes.
