Tasmania's West Coast represents one of Australia's last true wilderness frontiers, stretching from the Pieman River southward through Strahan and the rugged West Coast Range. This remote region, where ancient rainforest meets wild ocean, is dominated by the dramatic peaks of Mount Murchison (1,275m) and the Tyndall Range, their quartzite summits often crowned in snow.

The historic port of Strahan sits at the edge of Macquarie Harbour, gateway to the Gordon River's pristine rainforest waterways. The West Coast Wilderness Railway winds through deep valleys and dense rainforest between Strahan and Queenstown, climbing some of the steepest rail gradients in the Southern Hemisphere, while Lake Burbury and Lake Macintosh mirror the surrounding peaks.

The region's landscape tells a story of extremes, from the sheltered waters of Macquarie Harbour to the endless waves of Ocean Beach, Tasmania's longest beach.
