Gallery: Cradle Mountain

Stretching across Tasmania's Central Highlands, the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park forms the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The park extends from the iconic Cradle Mountain in the north to Lake St Clair in the south, encompassing the Du Cane Range and Mount Ossa (1,617 metres), Tasmania's highest peak.

The dramatic landscape was carved by ancient glaciers, creating pristine tarns like Dove Lake beneath Cradle Mountain's jagged peaks and Barn Bluff's distinctive shape. The world-famous Overland Track winds 65 kilometres through this alpine wonderland, passing ancient rainforest, button grass plains, and rugged mountain peaks.

Established in 1922 through the vision of Gustav Weindorfer, this protected wilderness spans from snow-covered peaks in winter to vibrant wildflower displays in summer, and showcases some of Australia's most dramatic mountain landscapes.
